The Philippine archipelago is home to more than 130 ethnolinguistic groups, with each having a distinct language and music culture. In 2019, the Komisyon ng Wikang Filipino (Commission on Filipino Languages) released a report that 39 out of 130 indigenous languages are already in various stages of endangerment that need preservation and revival. In this fast-changing world, speakers of indigenous languages are declining in number, whilst technological industries are rising which inevitably contributes to language loss and cultural homogeneity. Hence, the transmission of language and culture among generations of Filipinos has been heedlessly impeded.
To address the issue of language extinction and endangerment, I have commissioned new works for voice, written in various Filipino languages.
The world premiere of the first set of commissioned compositions was on May 12, 2022 at the Conrad Prebys Concert Hall, University of California, San Diego.
First batch of commissioned works:
KALIKHASAN - Jonathan Domingo
PINTIG - Chaitanya Tamayo
AMAHAN NAMO - Dave Dagta
TULO'EY APUY - Reis Luke Aquino
